Ganpat Metal Industries SMO 254 is a super austenitic grade stainless steel. The primary alloying metals in this grade of stainless steel are molybdenum and nitrogen. Because of a high content of molybdenum and nitrogen, in the alloy, the fasteners offer high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Further, this grade of stainless steel is has an impact toughness, two times that of grade 316.

Additionally, SMO 254 Material Fasteners have a high tensile strength as compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 316L & is known to possess excellent workability as well. UNS S31254 6mo Fasteners offers excellent resistance to stress related corrosion cracking as the fasteners have been cold formed. The fasteners may also be used without the need to re-anneal at testing up to 120°C. The lack of sulphur along with its high hardening rate, makes this alloy difficult to machine. Although, using sharp overpowered machine tools, positive feeds, good amount of lubrication along with slow speeds is known to offer good machining results.

Hot working operations like Forging, upsetting and other operations can be performed between a temperature range of 982 - 1149°C (1800 - 2100°F). heating the alloy beyond this temperature will cause the 1.4547 Bolts to scale and will also reduce the workability of the material.The alloy for SMO 254 can be annealed by heating it to a temperature range between 1149 °C - 1204°C following which the fasteners need to be water quenched. Annealing the alloy ASTM A479 UNS S31254 increases its corrosion resistance.

Although cold working the 254 SMO Fasteners is difficult because of its high hardening rate, cold working the alloy leads to an increase in strength and toughness. The alloy can be cold worked using all conventional methods.Since the alloy of 254 SMO Bolts does not respond to heat treatment, the only way to harden the alloy is by cold reduction. Applications of the SMO 254 Fasteners include Desalination plant equipment, Seawater handling systems, Control and instrumentation tubes, Paper and pulp, Chemical processing, Flue gas desulphurisation units in power plants.
